With an area of over 900,000 km², Indonesia is home to the third largest area of tropical rainforest in the world. However, this wonder of nature with its immense diversity has been in danger for many years.

From 2002 to 2019 alone, Indonesia lost 26.8 Mha of its rainforests to slash-and-burn agriculture, of which 36% were primary forests. The resulting degradation and erosion of these areas has led to an enormous release of CO2 and is also destroying adjacent ecosystems, including coastal marine systems such as coral reefs.

To address this broad problem, the project aims to inspire the local community to work together to implement environmentally sustainable systems. In this way, a self-sufficient future is to be made possible, in which economic development and a healthy life are in harmony with nature conservation.

The intention of the project is to successfully develop and establish this concept in the Indonesian region of Wane, Bima, so that it can later be quickly and efficiently applied in other tropical rainforest regions worldwide.

The holistic approach of the  Eco Project Wane

In order to ensure the protection of the ecosystems in the long term, Eco Project Wane relies in particular on the involvement of the local community. Only if there is an awareness of nature can sustainable protection be ensured.

Protection of the intact ecosystems

Primary forests are protected from further degradation by reforestation of a buffer zone. Combined with political work and local education, the goal is to convert these important ecosystems into protected areas in the long term.

Establishment of sustainable agriculture

Based on concepts of ecological agroforestry and permaculture, incentives are created and ecologically and economically sensible exit concepts from destructive methods such as slash-and-burn and monoculture are developed together with the farmers.

Ecological education and information

Education and information are the basis for the sustainability of the project. The project aims to work with residents and farmers to chart an ecological, sustainable path and ultimately enable the development of a strong and self-governing eco-community.
